This is the symptom of feature sprawl—the product management pathology where each new quarterly feature is bolted onto an increasingly unmanageable UI framework.
The Wisdom of Japanese Bento Boxes
Centuries ago in Japan, culinary masters faced a similar organizational dilemma: how to arrange a wide variety of distinctly prepared ingredients—rice, pickled vegetables, fish, seasonings—into a compact, portable box without letting flavors bleed into one another or crushing delicate textures.
Their answer was the Bento (弁当): a vessel partitioned into rigorous, deliberate compartments. Each compartment has a strict boundary. Each item is elevated, visible at a single glance, and effortlessly accessible.
Translating Partitions to 120Hz Screens
In our software (including EditraPDF and our upcoming projects), we translated this philosophy into five core tenets:
- Zero Buried Menus: Core functionality lives in distinct visual cards on the primary canvas. Users can see their document preview, PDF text editor drawer, and signature dock simultaneously.
- Asymmetric Hierarchy: Instead of uniform, repetitive lists, bento boxes give primary weight to the primary objective while keeping secondary utilities neatly arranged around the perimeter.
- One-Handed Thumb Flow: The most crucial partitions are intentionally anchored in the bottom 40% of the viewport—the natural ergonomic reach zone of modern 6.7-inch screens.
